For this series I portrayed men from around the globe in their working environment. A simple fact, but there is a story behind these images. For work, and the position it takes in the life of an individual, tells us a lot about how society is organized and oriented.

The question raised by each of these images: is a man’s identity based on his work, or is his work based on his identity? It is up to the viewer to answer that question. In the wealthy, capitalist Western world, men seem to identify strongly with their work: they are what they do. Their existence seems to be based on their job. In less advanced countries, this is often quite different: people tend to do work that suits them

‘Men at work’ shows the viewer the importance of work in our lives and challenges us to question our own choices. Is my identity based on my work, or is it the other way around?

The book was launched together with a solo exhibition in Amsterdam's Melkweg Gallery. 'Men at work' won the 2012 Red Dot Award for design. This book is now sold out.
